Winter storm Skylar is the latest in a repeating round of winter storms to pound the Northeast since the start of March. Heavy snow, damaging winds and coastal flooding are possible throughout New England starting tomorrow.
25 years ago today, another severe winter storm struck and dropped snow on one of the largest areas ever recorded. The Superstorm of 1993 lasted from March 12-15 and was dubbed the Storm of the Century. Estimated damages in 1993 dollars was $5.5 billion and 270 people were left dead across 13 states from Florida to Maine. Over 100 million people were affected during this event with widespread blizzard conditions existing from the Deep South to New England during this four-day period
Weather Weirdness from the Superstorm of 93′
- Near whiteout conditions in downtown Atlanta
- Double-digit snowfall totals were measured in 20 states from Alabama to Maine
- Florida Panhandle received up to 6 inches of snow
- 235 Coast Guard rescues in the Gulf of Mexico
- Embedded supercells spawned 11 tornadoes in Florida
